Spaghetti originated in Naples, Antonio Viviani being the one who named them so in 1842, because they looked like pieces of string ("spago" in Italian). Their traditional diameter, average in the universe of long pasta, makes them one of the most versatile types of pasta.

Serving recommendation: tomato sauce with oil and basil. In the backyard, Rome's historic district, "trattorias" serve "alla putanesca", an appetizing recipe based on black olives, capers, anchovies and tomatoes.
